You will have already read much about the recent $570m budget’s big picture outcomes in local media and Council’s Moreton Living Newsletter.Roads, parks, carparks, pathways and sports in Divison 11 are the big beneficiaries amongst this budgets $182 million dollar capital works programme.

COUNCIL ELECTIONS SATURDAY 28th APRIL

The Local Government Elections will be held on Saturday 28th April with polling booths open between 8am and 6pm.

This page of my Website will keep you informed of important election information and updates on my activities and statements leading up to the election. (Links to the first two of my Election brochures and other material appear on this page)

Postal Voting Applications

Applications can be made immediately but the Electoral Commission cannot forward ballot material until after the close of nominations on Tuesday 27 March 2012.

If you will be way on election day and require a postal vote, contact me and I can send you a Postal Voting Application.

Cut-off date for return of postal ballot papers: 6:00 pm Tuesday 8 May 2012.

Financial Snapshots

  • From a deficit 4 years ago, Council has brought its operational budget into surplus in 2010/11
  • Operational Savings of more than $100 million have been achieved in this term of Council helping to keep downward pressure on rates
  • Average annual residential owner occupied rates between 2008 and 2012 at 2.8% have been kept to less than CPI (3.62%) and the more relevant Local Government Cost Index (4.59%)
  • Council revenue from commercial investments will exceed $6 million in 2011/12 and continue to rise in future years helping keep downward pressure on rates
  • Community Equity (ie the value of all the council assets) is $5,175 million
  • Councils total liabilities (i.e. borrowings and other commitments) at $417 million equates to someone having a $40,000 loan on a $500,000 house purchase
  • Only Council in Queensland to commit $48 million to subsidise residents water and sewerage access charge increases
  • The Department of Local Government and Planning’s most recent evaluation of the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s (MBRC) notes the Council’s STRONG financial position
  • The Department’s review of Council’s Financial Management (Sustainability) Return undertaken in 2011 indicates that the council remains financially viable throughout the forecast period to 2018/19
  • External auditor endorses independent committee member (former Auditor General Len Scanlan) commendation of the quality of council’s 2011 financial statements stating that they are superior to those of other local governments


Key Policies and Plans

  • Continue opposition to any expansion of quarries at Narangba
  • Continue lobbying the State Government to progress the Narangba quarry haulage route to free local roads from trucks
  • Continue the lobbying of State and Federal Governments to progress planning and construction of an upgraded Young's Crossing
  • Construction of a left turn lane from Young's Crossing Rd onto Dayboro Rd (design complete, construction imminent)
  • Construction of additional football fields at Harris Ave, Narangba and progress proposed tennis courts
  • Further increase expenditure on road reconstruction and maintenance (including sealing of Theodore Rd, Kurwongbah)
  • Progress reconstruction of the flood damaged Goat Track to Mt Nebo
  • Support the expansion of informal youth programs and services across the division
  • Fight to further reduce bureaucracy and red tape
  • Complete implementation of a flood buyback policy
  • Progress future stages of Samford Parklands master plan
  • Increase investment in road reconstruction and maintenance
  • Maintain open and transparent representation within the provisions of the Local Government Act
  • Fight to contain “cost of living” pressures
  • Strive to contain rate rises to less than inflation
  • Continue to provide an independent voice in Council
