Latest on Water

The State Government recently offered to hand water back to Councils. At a Council meeting on 16th June 2011, Council decided not to withdraw from Unitywater for the provision of water and wastewater services in our region. An independent report by one of Australia’s leading accounting firms, Ernst & Young, found that the cost involved in withdrawing from the Unitywater operation, with assets of more than $2.5 billion, would be many tens of millions of dollars. The report also states that the Council which elects to withdraw from Unitywater must pay the disestablishment costs of the other Council, including any reasonable consequential loss suffered by the remaining participating Council. For your information Unitywater advise that their fixed access and water usage charge will increase by 3.6% next year, while the government bulk water prices will increase by 16.5%. The loss of previously provided State subsidies also impacts significantly on the finances of all water businesses in South East Qld and is a major factor in the cost of water and wastewater services.
